You’ll gain a clear understanding of key terminologies and the medical rationale behind the need for phlebotomy.
Understand the importance of accountability, competencies, consent, and proper documentation in the phlebotomy procedure.
Gain in-depth knowledge of the equipment used in phlebotomy, including safety-engineered needles, and learn proper disposal methods. You’ll also understand needle stick injuries and how to minimise the risk during procedures.
Understand and practice essential infection control measures, including hand hygiene and the Standard Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT). You’ll also explore risk management strategies to minimise infection.
Learn the common errors in phlebotomy and how to prevent them, along with techniques to troubleshoot for a successful draw.
Gain a thorough understanding of haemolysed samples, supported by relevant research. Learn key terminologies, how to prevent haemolysis during draws, and the impact of haemolysed samples on both patients and healthcare organisations.
Gain an in-depth understanding of arm anatomy, including the differences between veins, arteries, and nerves, to accurately locate viable veins for blood draws. You’ll also learn how to locate veins using the appropriate equipment and apply these skills during the training.
Put your learning into practice through simulated procedures. You are encouraged to attempt the procedure as many times as necessary to build your confidence.
